Lintasarta: Digital data provider

JAKARTA (JP): The expanding telecommunications industry in Indonesia has seen several companies establish value-added telecommunications and data communication services providers.

One such leading firm is PT Aplikanusa Lintasarta which was set up in April 1988.

The company, dedicated to providing data communications and network application services to the banking community, financial institutions, corporate institutions and other data communication users in Indonesia, was initially established by several prominent parties, including PT Indosat, PT Telkom, a group of seven state-owned banks, the Association of Private National Banks (Perbanas), which represented private banks, and BPD Jaya which represented regional development banks.

The company is now owned by state-owned telecommunications operators Indosat and Telkom, and PT Telekomindo, various banks' employees foundations and by cooperatives.

As a data communications operator and network application services company, Lintasarta provides Packet Switched Data Network (PSDN) services in cooperation with Telkom, and cooperates with Indosat to provide Very Small Aperture Terminal (VSAT) data and Internet services called IdOLA. In 1992, Lintasarta began offering digital data networks using fiber-optic cables.

The company also supplies data over voice digital equipment that allows simultaneous transmission of voice and digital data traffic across ordinary telephone lines at speeds of up to 64 Kbps.

Lintasarta also provides network application facilities for the country's official electronic bank reporting system, shared automated teller machine systems, a monetary information system and a regional processor for the Society for Worldwide Interbank Financial Telecommunications (SWIFT) System in Indonesia.

Other data communication service offered by Lintasarta is the Leased Circuit (LC Data), a system that utilizes analog technology for 'point to point' linkage. It allows users data from one computer to another in different locations or cities.

Another system available to customers is the Digital Data Network (DDN). Utilizing the existing telephone lines normally used for voice communications, it can also be optimized for data transmission. Digital data technology produces a higher speed than analog leased circuits.

Lintasarta also provides services to customers who require domestic and overseas data transmission in one network. The PSDN technology is used in this system. Access to the system is through a 'dial-up' or 'dedicated-line' method. The PSDN also has other facilities such as Frame Relay and Virtual Private Network which may be utilized more economically for LAN-to-LAN connection as well as for other applications.

The company's Internet service, IdOLA, is designed to fulfill the demand of communications and online information access between cities throughout Indonesia and beyond. By accessing a 28.8 Kbps speed modem from 11 cities in the country, it is aimed to serve both individuals and corporate customers. The facilities include access to many information providers in Indonesia, many forums and all Internet facilities including electronic mail, the news group, Telnet, Gopher, WAIS, FTP and the World Wide Web.

Other than providing a convenient service to clients, Lintasarta offers a consultation service by providing an accurate, efficient and optimally integrated total solution in overcoming telecommunications and information system problems. (icn)
