LinkedIn Introduces AI Slop Reporting Feature to Combat AI Content
LinkedIn is taking a new step to maintain the quality of conversations on its platform by introducing a reporting feature titled ‘Seems like AI slop’. This feature allows users to flag posts deemed to rely too heavily on artificial intelligence (AI) or those of such low quality that they are considered inauthentic.
This move is part of LinkedIn’s effort to limit the influx of automated content that is increasingly prevalent on the professional social media platform. LinkedIn’s Chief Product Officer, Hari Srinivasan, explained that while the term ‘AI slop’ does not have a strictly standardised definition, user feedback will be utilised to refine the company’s low-quality content detection systems.
According to Srinivasan, the new button can be accessed via the three-dot menu on every post. When users select the ‘Seems like AI slop’ option, the report serves as a signal for LinkedIn’s system to evaluate similar content in the future. Furthermore, reported posts will see a reduction in their algorithmic reach, ensuring that inauthentic content appears less frequently in users’ feeds, thereby creating more space for genuine human interaction.
In addition to the reporting button, LinkedIn has announced changes to its own AI-based features. The company has decided to remove the ‘Enhance Your Post’ feature, which previously assisted users in completely rewriting posts using AI. In its place, LinkedIn will now only provide a proofreading feature, designed to maintain the author’s original writing style without altering their personal voice. This step is intended to encourage the creation of more authentic content that reflects the real experiences of its users.
Efforts to maintain content quality are also being bolstered by improvements to automated moderation systems. LinkedIn claims to have successfully blocked hundreds of thousands of automated comment attempts daily and thwarted billions of automated activities, including mass AI-based posts, in recent months.
LinkedIn’s decisive action comes amidst the rising use of generative AI to create professional content. A study by Pangram Labs previously estimated that approximately 41 per cent of long-form posts on LinkedIn are created entirely using AI. This phenomenon has raised concerns that the platform’s timeline is being flooded with uniform-sounding writing that lacks personal experience and originality. Through these updates, LinkedIn hopes to balance the use of AI as a productivity tool without sacrificing the authenticity of communication between users.
