The premium automotive market in the United States, which once offered relatively affordable prices, is beginning to lose its footing. Two premium American brands, Cadillac and Lincoln, are now positioning their entry-level models at prices increasingly distant from the concept of ‘luxury for the masses’.

CarsCoops reported on Wednesday that Lincoln has just introduced the Corsair Hybrid 2027 as the entry-level model for consumers wanting to enter the brand. However, the vehicle is priced from US$48,790, or approximately Rp863.2 million.

Meanwhile, Cadillac has set the XT5 starting at US$46,595 (around Rp825.7 million). These prices mean American consumers must spend a considerable amount just to obtain a model at the very bottom of the premium SUV range.

Conversely, other manufacturers are increasingly focusing on vehicles with higher profit margins. Ford, as the parent company, has also reduced the number of models in the lower price segment and directed its portfolio towards vehicles considered to have greater appeal and profitability.

The problem is that this strategy has the potential to create a gap in the market. Consumers who want a vehicle with a premium image without having to pay close to the price of a top-tier luxury car now have fewer options.

This situation also opens opportunities for Audi, BMW, Lexus and a number of new premium brands to exploit the gap by offering vehicles positioned between mass-market and luxury cars.

If the trend continues, the term ‘affordable luxury car’ in the United States may no longer be about finding a model with a low price, but rather about finding a premium vehicle that least stretches the consumer’s budget.
