Lights at Monas to HI Roundabout Turned Off for 1 Hour, Jakarta Saves Rp 140 Million
The DKI Jakarta Provincial Government turned off lights at several iconic points in the capital for one hour to commemorate Earth Day 2026. This energy-saving action successfully saved electricity costs of up to Rp 140 million.
The shutdown was carried out from 8:30 PM WIB to 9:30 PM WIB on Saturday night (25/4) at various locations, such as the National Monument (Monas), Hotel Indonesia Roundabout (HI), and DKI Jakarta City Hall. For 60 minutes, these areas appeared dark as part of efforts to reduce carbon emissions.
Head of the DKI Jakarta Environmental Agency, Dudi Gardesi, stated that the action is part of the Provincial Government’s efforts to educate the public in line with the target of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 30% by 2030.
“The Energy Saving Action carried out last night is a routine action by the DKI Jakarta Provincial Government. This activity also refers to Governor’s Instruction No. 14 of 2021 regarding the Implementation of Light Shutdowns for Energy Saving and Carbon Emission Reduction,” said Dudi in his statement on Monday (27/4/2026).
Dudi explained that based on data from PLN Jakarta Raya Distribution Main Unit (PLN Disjaya), the one-hour light shutdown saved 96.91 MWh of electricity consumption.
“From this activity, the recorded electricity cost savings reached Rp 140,226,312 and a reduction in carbon emissions of 77.53 tons of CO2e,” he revealed.
Furthermore, Dudi emphasised that this achievement demonstrates the real impact of energy-saving actions in both reducing greenhouse gas emissions and improving electricity cost efficiency.
“We appreciate the active participation of the community that has supported this Energy Saving Action. This shows a collective awareness to continue implementing energy-saving behaviour as a step to address climate change,” he said.
He also added that the programme will continue to be implemented periodically every year, with the hope of encouraging Jakarta residents to make energy saving a daily habit.
“This energy-saving activity can start from simple steps at each home, such as replacing conventional lights with energy-saving LED lights, unplugging unused electronic equipment, and efficiently adjusting room cooling temperatures. From these small daily habits, significant contributions can be made to carbon emission reduction and support the creation of a more environmentally friendly and sustainable Jakarta,” he added.
