Light drizzle proves more hazardous for motorcycle riders.

JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com – In recent days, rainfall has drenched the Jabodetabek area with intensities not always heavy. Yet behind the drizzle, there are risks that riders often underestimate, especially during light rain. A road that merely looks wet can become more slippery than during a heavy downpour. ‘Many people think heavy rain is the most dangerous. In fact, when rain is just starting or only a drizzle, that thin layer of water mixes with dirt on the road and makes the surface very slippery,’ Victor told Kompas.com on Tuesday, 3 March 2026.

Technically, this condition reduces tyre traction. The water coating the asphalt prevents direct contact between the tyre surface and the road, reducing grip. In such conditions, both cars and motorcycles are more prone to losing grip, particularly during acceleration and braking. The risk increases further when drivers brake abruptly. A loss of traction can cause tyres to skid because the frictional force is not sufficient to hold the vehicle’s speed.

Therefore, Victor reminded that it is important to adjust driving style from the outset as soon as rain begins to fall. Reducing speed, maintaining a safe following distance, and braking smoothly and gradually are the simplest steps to minimise risk. In addition, riders should be more alert to reading road conditions. A glossy-looking road surface, oil stains, or stretches heavily trafficked by heavy vehicles should be approached with caution. At these points, the risk of slipping is usually higher.

‘In essence, do not wait for an emergency to react. When light rain starts, treat road conditions as not ideal and adjust your riding accordingly,’ said Victor. With rainfall increasing across the Jabodetabek area recently, vigilance is key. Light rain may seem inconsequential, but that is precisely where the risks often arise without being noticed.
