The pressure of the cost of living is becoming a serious political issue for US President Donald Trump ahead of the mid-term elections on 3 November 2026. Several White House efforts to curb prices are facing obstacles, while recent polls show declining approval ratings for Trump, including among Republican Party supporters.

The Washington Post reported on Monday (28/9/2026) that the White House has rolled out several ideas to ease price pressures. However, some of these measures are facing opposition from groups traditionally close to the Republican Party.

Trump previously paved the way for tariff-free imports of beef cuts for 90 days to increase supply and lower the price of ground beef. This policy met resistance from several Republican senators and House members from agricultural states, who feared it would harm American ranchers.

The Trump administration subsequently considered restricting diesel fuel exports following a surge in prices. This idea also faced objections from major oil companies and Energy Secretary Chris Wright, who warned that export restrictions could reduce production incentives and risk raising prices in certain parts of the United States.

Amidst this pressure, Trump has offered a much larger idea: providing a $5,000 dividend to every adult American citizen if the Republican Party manages to retain control of the House and Senate in the mid-term elections.

This promise has not been met with entirely positive responses from his own party. Several Republican lawmakers have questioned the fiscal consequences, as the programme is estimated to require more than $1 trillion.

Congress must also approve the budget to realise these payments. Therefore, a Republican victory in November would not automatically mean $5,000 cheques could be distributed immediately.

The Washington Post reported that some Republicans are also concerned that such a massive injection of cash could widen the deficit and add to inflationary pressures. The United States’ national debt has already exceeded $40 trillion.

These economic issues are now intersecting with a more fundamental political problem for Trump: unrest within parts of the Republican base.

Loyal Voters Begin to Doubt

Melanie is one such example. The 77-year-old woman from North Carolina stated that she has always been very conservative and has never voted for a Democratic candidate in her lifetime.

However, ahead of the mid-term elections, Melanie said she is considering something she has never done before: voting for a Democratic candidate.

Melanie expressed her frustration during a call to The Megyn Kelly Wrap-Up Show on SiriusXM, hosted by Emily Jashinsky. She stated that she now sees only two options: not exercising her right to vote or voting Democrat.

“At this point, I have two choices. I can stay home and not vote… or I can vote Democrat,” said Melanie.

Her frustration is primarily directed at the Republican Party. Melanie even mentioned considering voting for every Democratic candidate as a form of protest.

“I am so angry with the Republican Party that I might just vote Democrat for every position,” she said.

She then posed a simple question: “Why should I remain loyal to them?”

The testimony of a single caller cannot be used to conclude that a mass exodus of Republican voters is occurring. However, Melanie’s anxiety emerges at a time when broader data shows a decline in Trump’s approval ratings.
