Life expectancy of Jakartans reaches 71 years
JAKARTA (JP): Governor Surjadi Soedirdja says that the life expectancy of Jakarta residents is now higher than that of the residents of other provinces in the country.
The increase in life expectancy is the result of the increase in people's welfare, the governor said in his written address commemorating National Solidarity Day at a neighborhood chief's office in Utan Panjang, Kemayoran, Central Jakarta yesterday.
According to the latest data, the annual per capita income of Jakarta residents is Rp 6,943,700 (around US$3,000), while their life expectancy rate is 71 years for women and 67 years for men, Surjadi said. The written address was read by Maskup Ustianto, city assistant for administrative affairs.
In comparison, the annual national per capita income is Rp 1,660,750 ($730) and the average life expectancy rate is 63 for both men and women.
"These facts indicate the success of our development in which the people's participation has played a significant role," he said, adding that the people's participation has been increasing from year to year.
He cited the participation of housewives through the activities of the PKK, a grassroots movement for the welfare of families.
On behalf of the governor, Maskup symbolically awarded 2,650 PKK activists for their roles in increasing family income.
On the same occasion, the Ministry of Population/Chairman of the National Family Planning Board awarded Jakarta provincial PKK the first prize for its success in improving the health of children under five years old.
The Ministry also gave Manggala Karya Kencana award to three city officials for their roles in enhancing family planning programs and family welfare in the capital.
The award recipients were Vice Governor for People's Welfare Museno, South Jakarta Mayor Pardjoko and North Jakarta Mayor Suprawito.
Surjadi said that such awards motivate city officials and PKK activists to work harder, especially in improving the health of children.
"Children are the future and educating them properly means preparing qualified human resources for the future," Surjadi said.
To commemorate National Solidarity Day, the administration is carrying out several projects, including the renovation of 64 houses and construction of eight public toilets and 1,245 meters of neighborhood road. The Rp 618 million project was financed by the city administration and private donors.
The city administration also donated 300 package of food, 100 ID cards, clothing and 500 fruit and bamboo trees to poor people.
A charity bazaar and mass circumcision were also held to commemorate National Solidarity Day, which falls on Dec. 22. (29)
