Tripoli (ANTARA) - Libya’s internationally recognised Government of National Unity announced on Sunday (6/9) that it had dismantled an organised sabotage cell harbouring individuals suspected of carrying out attacks on oil and electricity facilities.

Libyan authorities arrested five Libyans and foreign nationals suspected of involvement in suicide drone attacks on oil and electricity facilities in Tripoli and Zawiya, in western Libya.

In a statement on the government platform “hokomitna”, local authorities said the operation, carried out by the country’s ministry of defence, also foiled several other plots that were still in the preparation stage.

The foiled plans included one targeting a power plant south of Tripoli and several others aimed at vital facilities as well as political, security and military leaders.

The statement added that investigations are still under way to identify other individuals involved, as well as those who planned, funded or supported the operations.

The Libyan government said it would release further details, including the identities of those involved and their supporters, once the initial investigation is completed.

The announcement comes after weeks of attacks and acts of sabotage targeting oil and electricity facilities across western Libya, placing increasing strain on the power grid and public services during the peak summer months.
