Li Auto to begin small-scale implementation of solid-state batteries
Chinese automotive manufacturer Li Auto is reportedly preparing to begin the integration of solid-state battery technology in limited quantities for its vehicles by 2027 or 2028.
According to a report by CarnewsChina on Tuesday (22/9) local time, the company expects that mass production of these vehicle batteries could take up to five years to realise.
Liu Zhimin, Senior Director of Power Batteries at Li Auto, stated that the company is currently undertaking several development projects for solid-state batteries. Prototypes of this technology have already undergone validation within smart glasses developed by Li Auto.
However, significant challenges remain on the path to mass production. Li Auto must ensure that the batteries possess adequate durability and efficient charging performance, while simultaneously maintaining competitive production costs.
Consequently, the 2027-2028 period should be viewed more as a phase of limited application rather than an indication that the technology is ready for widespread use.
The development of solid-state batteries is also part of Li Auto’s broader strategy to master battery technology internally. The company has been developing its own battery cells since 2020, covering 5C cells, battery packs, and Battery Management Systems (BMS).
These internally developed batteries are already utilised in several models, including the Li L6, Li L8, and Li i8, before being gradually expanded to other vehicle lines.
For Li Auto, solid-state batteries represent more than just the development of new technology. The company must find a balance between durability, charging speed, and cost before the technology can be deployed extensively.
Li Auto’s move demonstrates that Chinese electric vehicle manufacturers are beginning to prepare for the transition from the currently dominant lithium-ion batteries towards solid-state technology, even though the road to mass production remains long.
