Li arrives in HK for Bank meet
HONG KONG (Reuter): Chinese Premier Li Peng arrived in Hong Kong yesterday for next week's World Bank/International Monetary Fund annual meeting.
Li was greeted by Beijing-anointed Hong Kong leader Tung Chee- hwa, Chinese Foreign Ministry Commissioner in Hong Kong Ma Yuzhen and Xinhua News Agency director Jiang Enzhu at the airport.
Li arrived on an Air China Boeing 747 aircraft from Beijing, accompanied by his wife Zhu Lin.
He will be in Hong Kong for four days.
It was the first visit by a senior Chinese figure to Hong Kong since Britain returned the territory to Beijing's rule on July 1. Li Peng and other leaders attended the ceremony.
Some 150 schoolchildren waved small Chinese red flags as Li and his entourage made their way along a red carpet into waiting limousines.
On Tuesday, Li will deliver a keynote address to international bankers to mark the opening of the World Bank/IMF meeting.
