LG launches new laptops to tap RI IT market

The Jakarta Post, Jakarta

The country's laptop computer market has a newcomer. LG Electronics Indonesia (LGEIN) has launched its new line of products, including portable computers and USB flashdiscs.

LGEIN president director Kee Ju-lee said that the firm decided to launch the products in the country after market surveys suggested good opportunities.

"The survey says that demand for IT products is ever increasing here, therefore we're launching such products including laptop computers," Kee said.

Last week, LGEIN launched four portable computer models -- LM60, LM70 Express Series and LW60 and LW70 Express Series-- with a prices ranging from US$1,800 to $2,500.

The firm hopes to sell 100 to 200 laptop computers per months.

According to the Melbourne-based Roy Morgan Research, there are currently 411,00 people that have portable computers in the country, two-thirds of whom are in the 18 to 34 age group.

The market researcher has also projected that a total 418,000 people in the country would purchase new laptop computers in the next 12 months.

Aside from the computers, the firm has also launched DLP projectors aimed at the low-end market.

"Why low-end? Because entry models like this one would appeal to young professionals and companies, due to its competitive price and weight of only 2.2 kilograms," LGEIN IT product group leader Robin said.

Robin went on to say that high-end projectors for home cinema purposes had at the moment, had a very limited market in the country, therefore LG opted not to launch any for the time being.

"But I believe, in time, LG's digital projector would perform well in the country as good as it does in European market," he said.
