A 56-second eruption from the Lewotobi Laki-Laki volcano on the Indonesian island of Flores on Sunday sent an ash cloud 3.5 kilometres into the air.

Indonesian authorities have imposed a ban on all activity within six kilometres of the volcano. They have also urged residents in villages near the volcano to remain vigilant for volcanic mudflows and to cover their noses and mouths should ash fall in their vicinity.

The volcano has experienced several eruptions this year, most recently affecting air traffic on the holiday island of Bali. Flores lies east of Bali and is also a popular tourist attraction owing to its diving sites and spectacular landscapes.
