Social media has been shaken by the circulation of screenshots from a WhatsApp group (WAG) belonging to students in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Information Technology (DTET_I) at the Faculty of Engineering, Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM), containing sexual harassment content. In a post on Threads, group members were seen harassing a female student by making explicit comments about her body.

“Threads users, it is sad because the viral FH UI case changed nothing… turning women into sexual objects, how could they be so brazen in harassing women? It has happened again at UGM with different individuals. Please help boost this!!” wrote the Threads account @hmart_lw, as reported by detikJogja on Monday (28/9/2026).

As circulated, several chats from group members discuss a female student’s body parts on campus. The group members explicitly mentioned her name and the specific body parts in question. Other members also chimed in with similar comments.

Regarding the incident, UGM spokesperson Dr I Made Andi Arsana revealed that the university is conducting an investigation and will issue a further statement. “UGM is taking careful and cautious steps to investigate this case of sexual harassment. The Faculty of Engineering has already issued a statement of position. Coordination with relevant parties is being carried out well to ensure the steps taken are appropriate. We will provide updates at the earliest opportunity,” Made told detikJogja via text message on Monday (28/9).

The Chair of the UGM Task Force for the Prevention and Handling of Sexual Violence (PPKS), Prof Dra Raden Ajeng Yayi Suryo Prabandari, confirmed that the university is in the process of investigating the alleged sexual harassment.

“Thank you for contacting me and for your attention; the case is currently being processed by the task force in conjunction with the university,” Yayi told detikJogja via text message on Monday (28/9).

10 Students Suspended

Following the outcry over this case, the Faculty of Engineering at Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) has taken decisive action by suspending 10 students suspected of participating in the lewd chats. The suspension is set to last for 1.5 months before a final sanction is handed down by the UGM PPKS Task Force, and it may be extended if the investigation remains ongoing.

“Before the final sanction is decided by the UGM PPKS Task Force within the next 1.5 months, this suspension can be extended if necessary, for example, if the PPKS has not completed its examination,” explained the Dean of the UGM Faculty of Engineering, Prof Ir Selo, to detikJogja via text message on Tuesday (29/9).

Selo emphasised that the suspected students have been suspended from all academic activities effective today.

“This morning, the faculty plans to temporarily suspend all suspected students (documents are being prepared). It is true (suspended starting today); the suspension documents for the 10 suspected students will be signed shortly,” he said.
