Lessons from Vosco Cafe Malang and HIPMI
Business journeys do not begin on grand stages. They start with a cup of coffee, a small table, and conversations conducted with good intentions.
MALANG – In Malang, coffee is not merely a beverage. It has become an integral part of how people meet, converse, and build relationships. From cafe tables, light-hearted chats can gradually evolve into opportunities. Sometimes discussing business news, sometimes introducing friends, or simply sharing frustrations as fellow business practitioners.
I experienced this in the atmosphere of a cafe like Vosco in Malang City. Places like this do not just provide coffee, food, and comfortable spaces. More than that, they become social arenas. People do not always come just to drink coffee. Some meet clients, discuss with teams, complete work, or simply seek a fresh atmosphere to avoid mental blocks.
In the business world, such spaces hold value that is often invisible in financial reports. Cafes can serve as meeting points. There, conversations flow more freely than in meeting rooms. People can speak more casually, yet remain serious. Ideas can emerge without lengthy presentations. Even trust often grows not from promotional words, but from how someone carries themselves in simple conversations.
My experiences within the HIPMI environment also teach the same lesson. The Indonesian Young Entrepreneurs Association is not just a gathering place for young business actors. Within it, there is a process of mutual learning, mutual support, and opening paths for one another. For me, business networking is not merely adding contacts to a mobile phone. Business networking is about building trust, maintaining a good reputation, and being present with clear values.
Many people want extensive networks but forget that networks cannot be built solely with business cards. Business relationships grow from consistency. Showing up when needed. Responding to messages properly. Not easily breaking promises. Being honest when not yet capable. Not exaggerating when offering oneself. Simple things like this often become the first measure before people trust to collaborate.
In the HIPMI environment, I see that entrepreneurs cannot walk alone. No matter how strong the capital or how good the product, there are times when we need others’ perspectives. Problems become lighter when discussed together. Opportunities become visible only after meeting the right person. Strategies mature because they are tested in conversations with fellow business actors.
Coffee and cafes then become an intriguing bridge. They connect relaxed atmospheres with serious goals. At the coffee table, people can discuss prices, markets, collaborations, marketing, to challenges in managing teams. However, because the atmosphere is not too rigid, business conversations feel more human.
Of course, not all cafe chats will immediately turn into transactions. Not all meetings will become collaborations. However, every well-maintained encounter can become a social investment. In business, results may not come today. They might arrive months later, when someone remembers us as trustworthy individuals.
From Vosco, HIPMI, and many other coffee tables in Malang, I have learned one thing: business is not just about products and profits. Business is also about relationships. People buy because they need, but people collaborate because they trust.
Therefore, for young entrepreneurs, do not underestimate simple conversations. Do not belittle small meetings. Do not show up only when in need. Nurture relationships before seeking opportunities. Because in the business world, strong networks often arise from simple attitudes: willingness to listen, willingness to learn, and willingness to maintain trust.
