Lessons from Vidi Aldiano: List of Kidney Cancer Drugs Covered by BPJS Kesehatan

News of the passing of Indonesian musician Vidi Aldiano on 7 March 2026 after a prolonged battle with kidney cancer. He was diagnosed with Clear Cell Renal Cell Carcinoma (ccRCC), the most common form of kidney cancer in adults. ccRCC begins in the cells lining the small tubules of the kidney and can metastasise to other organs if not treated promptly. Treatments for this cancer typically involve a combination of surgery, targeted therapy and immunotherapy.

Under the JKN programme, the National Health Insurance scheme, there is significant financial protection for Indonesians. The JKN-KIS programme provides substantial financial protection for those with kidney cancer; drugs included in the Formularium Nasional (Fornas) are covered. Drugs that are experimental or new and not yet included in Fornas are usually borne by the patient. Patients are allowed to upgrade one level of care (for example from Class 1 to VIP) by paying the price difference themselves according to hospital rules.
