Less wealthy golfers

MANILA (AFP): A government committee looking into the
proliferation of golf courses in the Philippines has warned
prospective developers that they must allow access to less
wealthy players, a newspaper reported here yesterday.

"Let us remove the perception that golf is an elitist game,"
the Manila Times newspaper quoted Environment Undersecretary
Virgilio Marcelo, head of the committee, as saying.

The committee was created amid concerns that the construction
of golf courses was taking over agricultural land and causing
environmental damage.
