Leptospirosis Cases Surge in Pati, Health Office Urges Vigilance

The Pati District Health Office has urged residents to increase their vigilance following a reported surge in leptospirosis cases. The public has been asked to maintain environmental cleanliness and avoid direct contact with water or soil that may be contaminated.

Leptospirosis is a disease transmitted through the bacteria from the urine of infected animals, particularly rats. Transmission is risky when the bacteria enters the body through open wounds, skin that has been submerged in water for a long time, or mucous membranes such as the eyes, nose, and mouth.

The Health Office has asked residents not to take lightly any symptoms that point towards leptospirosis. Symptoms to watch out for include sudden fever, headache, muscle pain especially in the calves, red eyes, nausea, vomiting, and bodily weakness.

Residents who experience symptoms after being active in wet environments, flooded areas, rice fields, drains, or places with a high potential for rats are advised to immediately seek examination at the nearest health facility. Early treatment is important to prevent the condition from worsening.

Furthermore, the public is urged to use personal protective equipment such as boots and gloves when cleaning the environment. Skin wounds should also be tightly covered before engaging in activities in dirty or waterlogged areas.

Other preventive measures include cleaning waterways, covering food storage containers, disposing of rubbish properly, and controlling the rat population around the home. A clean environment can reduce the risk of transmitting the disease.

The Health Office also reminded residents not to delay seeking examination if suspicious complaints arise. Collective vigilance is considered important to prevent the increase in cases from spreading and to ensure treatment can be carried out more quickly.
