Chinese automotive brand Chery is confirmed to enter the Australian automotive market through its subsidiary Lepas at the end of 2026, launching the L6 electric SUV. Drive reported on Monday (15/6) local time that Lepas will introduce the L6 vehicle in the fourth quarter of 2026, between October and December. This move marks a new chapter in Chery’s strategy to strengthen its position in Australia’s increasingly crowded electric vehicle market, which is being filled by various Chinese brands. In terms of design, the L6 features a more rounded appearance compared to Chery, Omoda, and Jaecoo models. Nevertheless, the vehicle utilises the same platform, technology, and powertrain systems as other products under the group’s umbrella. In size, the Lepas L6 is positioned as a mid-size electric SUV, slotting between the BYD Atto 3 and Tesla Model Y. The model will also compete with the Geely EX5 and GAC Aion V, which have already entered the segment in Australia. Based on preliminary specifications, the L6 is equipped with a 67.1 kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery, claimed to provide a range of approximately 450 kilometres on a single charge. Power is delivered through a front-wheel-drive electric motor producing 160 kW and 275 Nm of torque. Lepas has not yet disclosed the price or complete feature list for the L6 BEV. However, several reports indicate that the BYD Atto 3 serves as the primary competitive benchmark for the model, with a price range between AUD 39,990 and AUD 44,990. Beyond the L6 BEV, Lepas also has a product line including a plug-in hybrid version of the L6, the compact L4 SUV, and the larger L8 SUV, which are expected to expand the brand’s portfolio in international markets in the future.
