A road subsidence at Lenteng Agung main road in South Jakarta has widened, affecting two lanes. The South Jakarta Public Works Department (SDBM) states that the damage was caused by a hollowed-out drainage channel beneath the road.

South Jakarta Public Works Department head Rifki Rismal said the department first received reports from residents and PPSU officers on Wednesday (27 May) evening, with the road already subsided and significantly deepened.

“As it was nighttime, we conducted monitoring on Thursday morning,” Rifki stated on Friday (29 May).

On Thursday (28 May) morning, SDBM teams carried out initial repairs using cold mix asphalt to ensure safety and comfort for road users. Coordination was also made with the South Jakarta Water Resources Department (SDA), as the primary damage was suspected to stem from the underground drainage system.

After initial repairs, SDA inspected the site and found the road’s substructure had eroded, requiring urgent work on the drainage crossing.

However, during a Thursday afternoon inspection, the road subsided and cracked again. Public Works officers installed water barriers to minimise accident risks for passing vehicles.

Shortly after, on Thursday night, the road fully collapsed and widened to engulf two lanes. Rifki said road repairs would only commence after SDA completes work on the culverts and drainage channels.

“Once the culverts are fixed, we will immediately repair the road,” Rifki said. (H-4)
