Lenteng Agung road subsidence temporarily covered with steel plates to ease traffic congestion
Jakarta, Kompas.com - A sinkhole on Lenteng Agung main road in Jagakarsa, South Jakarta, heading towards Depok, has been temporarily covered with soil, stones, and steel plates on Friday afternoon (29 May 2026). The closure is being carried out gradually to reduce lane narrowness that has caused traffic congestion since morning. Kompas.com’s on-site observation showed that officials first filled the hole with soil and stones before covering it with aligned steel plates. As the temporary closure progresses, road barriers and police lines have been adjusted to provide wider passage for vehicles. “We’re filling it up first to alleviate traffic congestion; it will be dug up again tonight,” said Sartono, head of Jagakarsa Water Resources Service Unit, at the scene on Friday. The situation caused vehicle queues and disrupted traffic flow. During the congestion, a minor collision occurred between two motorcycles when an ambulance passed. According on-site observations, motorcycle riders behind attempted to make way for the ambulance by turning and gesturing, but due to dense traffic and sudden slowing of vehicles ahead, a small collision was inevitable.Police officers on duty then urged drivers to continue moving to keep traffic flowing. The repairs were carried out after structural damage to the underground water channel was discovered. Sartono explained that the concrete in the drainage channel had deteriorated, causing the road to sink. “Turns out the cause is a 3-meter cul,” Sartono said.
