JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com – Jakarta’s Water Resources Department (SDA) Chief Ika Agustin Ningrum has targeted the asphalt work on the subsided section of Lenteng Agung Timur Road to be completed by Tuesday, 2 June 2026.

Asphalt work began Sunday night (31 May 2026).

“Efforts are being made to restore temporary road access, but comprehensive repairs will continue,” Ika stated in a text message to Kompas.com on Sunday.

“To quickly alleviate traffic congestion,” she added.

The subsidence was caused by changes in land use.

Therefore, all drainage channels in Jakarta need to be evaluated moving forward.

“The priority now is to restore normal access to Depok as quickly as possible, as this is a major route,” she added.

Previously, Sartono, Head of the Jagakarsa District Water Resources Department (SDA), said his office received initial reports of road issues starting Thursday night (28 May 2026).

“At that time, reports indicated a hole in the road,” he said.

“On Thursday night, we received the report; however, the SDA only handles the hole, while the road itself falls under Bina Marga’s jurisdiction,” Sartono stated in Jakarta on Friday (29 May 2026).

“We conducted a joint survey on Thursday morning; since then, Bina Marga has taken steps to level the undulating road surface to prevent vehicles from encountering bumps,” he added.

Bina Marga had installed warning signs around the site.

However, high vehicle traffic continued to strain the road, leading to a collapse that disrupted traffic around 22:30 WIB on Thursday.

“Bina Marga had repaired the undulating sections and placed warning signs, but as this is the only route, the signs were occasionally hit by vehicles, leading to the collapse that night,” he said.

Prior to repairs, several people and vehicles had fallen into the sinkhole due to the sudden road collapse.

“Following last night’s incident, we immediately initiated remedial measures,” he said.

The collapse occurred above a drainage channel connecting the PHB UI Canal to the Ciliwung River. Preliminary assessments suggest the channel’s structure has deteriorated due to age.
