JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com - A gaping hole has appeared on Lenteng Agung Road in South Jakarta, heading towards Depok, on Friday, 29 May 2026. The road subsidence has caused long traffic jams in the area. Kompas.com’s on-site observation showed the collapsed section on the left side of the road, consuming part of the roadway. The asphalt has sunk, exposing red soil underneath. To address the situation, authorities deployed heavy machinery to excavate the affected site. Meanwhile, sections of the road still passable were covered with steel plates to ensure safety for drivers. The road narrowing due to the subsidence has caused traffic congestion in the Lenteng Agung area. Traffic queues stretched from the Langga Raya junction. Various vehicles, including motorcycles, private cars, Transjakarta buses, trucks, and box vans, were stuck in the lengthy jam. After passing Lenteng Agung Station, drivers were directed to two alternative routes: alongside the railway tracks and towards SMA Negeri 38 Jakarta. Motorcycles could only move slowly between other vehicles. Congestion intensified when two traffic streams merged near Hotel Kartika One. South Jakarta’s Public Works Department stated that road repairs cannot be carried out soon, as the underlying damage must be addressed first. Head of South Jakarta’s Public Works Department, Rifki Rismal, said field inspections revealed the road’s substructure was hollow. He added that the damage is suspected to be caused by issues with the underground water channels.
