South Jakarta Water Resources Sub-Division (SDA Jaksel) has confirmed that repairs to the sinkhole at Lenteng Agung in Jagakarsa will be carried out without a full road closure to minimise traffic disruption.

Head of Operational Unit (Kasatpel) SDA Jagakarsa, Sartono, told reporters on Friday: “There will be no road closure, only one lane at a time. One side of the road will be worked on while the other is fitted with steel plates for traffic.”

Sartono said permanent repairs will begin at night with the installation of a two-metre box culvert at the sinkhole site. He added that no full road closure will occur during repairs, with work carried out in phases to allow vehicle movement.

He explained that installing the box culvert is expected to take two to three days, weather and underground utilities permitting. After completion, traffic should return to normal, although finishing works will continue in subsequent days.

The sinkhole is believed to have been caused by damage to an existing three-metre diameter culvert beneath the road. Sartono stated that part of the culvert’s structure had deteriorated, losing its ability to support the road surface, leading to collapse.

“An existing three-metre culvert was corroded. About a third of its top section was damaged, causing it to collapse and create the sinkhole,” he said.

SDA Jaksel urged residents to be patient and support the repair process to ensure smooth work and a quick return to normal traffic conditions.

The road damage was observed to occur gradually since Wednesday (27 May). South Jakarta Public Works Sub-Division (Bina Marga) had already conducted initial handling using cold mix asphalt to ensure safety and comfort for road users.

Bina Marga also coordinated with SDA Jaksel to investigate the cause. Initial suspicion is that the sinkhole was triggered by disturbances in the underground water channel.

The Jakarta Provincial Government continues to monitor the situation on-site and accelerate the repair process to restore normal traffic conditions.
