Lenteng Agung Road Collapse Prompts DKI Jakarta to Anticipate Sinkholes Elsewhere
Vice Governor of Jakarta Rano Karno has warned of potential sinkholes elsewhere in the city following a road collapse in Lenteng Agung, Jagakarsa, South Jakarta. Rano stated the phenomenon could occur due to undetected water seepage.
“The key concern is that sinkholes may not be limited to this area,” Rano said at Bundaran HI, Central Jakarta, on Friday (29 May 2026). “This is due to water seepage we cannot detect—wallahu a’lam—and could happen anywhere in Jakarta.”
Rano instructed the DKI Jakarta Provincial Government to swiftly address the Lenteng Agung collapse, which occurred on Thursday night. He confirmed he immediately contacted the Department of Water Resources (SDA) upon receiving the report.
According to Rano, immediate repairs are not possible as heavy machinery is required to excavate the collapsed road and identify subsurface issues. “Indeed, this requires heavy equipment; it cannot be done without excavation,” he said.
Although the repair is not yet complete, the provincial government has implemented temporary measures to prevent traffic disruption, including installing steel plates over the collapsed section. “Alhamdulillah, today’s solution is not perfect, but at least it allows traffic flow to resume,” he added.
Prior to this, DKI Jakarta’s SDA confirmed the presence of an old connecting channel (PHB) or culvert beneath the collapsed road in Lenteng Agung. Santo, Head of the South Jakarta SDA Sub-Division, stated that a field survey was conducted on Thursday (28 May).
“The SDA DKI Jakarta, through the Jagakarsa District SDA Operational Unit, conducted a field survey on Thursday (28 May),” Santo told reporters on Friday (29 May).
He confirmed the presence of an old culvert measuring approximately 3 metres wide and 6 metres long under Jalan Raya Lenteng Agung. “Indeed, beneath Jalan Raya Lenteng Agung lies an interconnecting channel (PHB) UI, or an old culvert, approximately 3 metres wide and 6 metres long,” he said.
Santo added that all water channels in Jakarta fall under the jurisdiction of the DKI Jakarta SDA, and emergency measures have been implemented at the collapse site.
