The Lenteng Agung pedestrian footbridge (JPO) in South Jakarta has gone viral after a video circulated showing an elderly woman struggling to climb the bridge because the lift had been damaged by unidentified persons.

Based on monitoring at the location on Tuesday (9/6/2026) at 15.20 WIB, the lifts on both sides of the Lenteng Agung footbridge were still out of order. The non-functioning lifts forced several residents to use the bridge’s fairly high stairs. Access to both lifts was closed off with plastic road barriers and chairs on each side. A sheet of paper bearing a notice that the lift was under repair was affixed to the lift doors. ‘Lift is under repair,’ read the notice.

The cable that caused the lift to fail was also visibly still severed. The damaged cable is located on the bridge pillar facing towards Depok. A Jakarta Bina Marga Agency officer at the scene, Rudi, confirmed that the lift was damaged as a result of the cable being cut, which then rendered the lift unable to function. ‘The lift is dead because it cannot function, because there is no electricity flow,’ said Rudi when met at the location. Rudi stated that the lift would be repaired as quickly as possible. He explained that the Bina Marga Agency is currently processing the lift repairs. ‘God willing, it will be fixed as soon as possible, it is being processed,’ he added.

Previously, in a widely shared video, the elderly woman was seen ascending slowly on the left side of the stairs. Her steps occasionally slowed while she held the handrail on her left to ease her footing. She paused briefly from time to time before continuing to climb the steps. In the video, the stairway appeared quiet, so no other users were there to assist the woman.

The Jakarta Bina Marga Agency stated that the Lenteng Agung footbridge lift is currently undergoing repairs. The lift on the footbridge was vandalised by unidentified persons. ‘Currently, the Lenteng Agung footbridge lift is temporarily unable to operate due to damage to the electrical system caused by an act of vandalism,’ according to a statement from Jakarta Bina Marga via its Instagram account @binamargadki, Tuesday (9/6).
