Lenovo: Teachers Must Guide Students to Use AI Appropriately

Jakarta (ANTARA) - Lenovo believes that teachers play a vital role in ensuring that the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in educational environments is conducted responsibly and provides benefits to the student learning process.

Debdut Maiti, Director and Head of Sales Solutions and Services Group for Lenovo Greater Asia Pacific, stated that educating on the use of AI in education is not merely about teaching how to use the technology, but also about equipping educators to guide students in using it appropriately.

“A teacher must encourage students to use AI as a tool, not a replacement,” said Debdit during the Lenovo Tech Day 2024 event in Jakarta on Thursday.

In response to this phenomenon, Lenovo outlined a programme implemented by the company in Hong Kong, which involves partnering with educational institutions to train teachers on the utilisation of AI in teaching and learning activities.

This training focuses not only on the technical aspects of using AI but also covers the limitations and guidelines for using such technology within the school environment.

For example, a student could prompt an AI to write an essay with a single command to complete a task easily and instantly. However, according to Maiti, such a method does not provide optimal benefits for the development of a student’s abilities.

Therefore, teachers need to guide students on when AI can be used to assist the learning process and when students must complete tasks independently to ensure they still gain understanding from the teaching and learning process.

“Generation Alpha and the generations that follow do not actually need much help to use AI. What is more important is teaching how to use AI responsibly,” he added.
