PT Kereta Api Indonesia (Persero) Daop 6 Yogyakarta is carrying out the restructuring and expansion of the Lempuyangan Station area to enhance intermodal connectivity, security, and passenger service comfort.

Feni Novida Saragih, Manager of Public Relations for KAI Daop 6 Yogyakarta, stated in Yogyakarta on Tuesday that Lempuyangan Station continues to experience an increase in passenger volume year on year. In 2024, Lempuyangan Station served a total of 5,392,700 passengers, growing by 4 per cent to reach 5,605,414 passengers in 2025, Feni noted in a written statement.

He added that the average volume of long-distance train passengers arriving at and departing from Lempuyangan Station reaches 12,586 passengers per day, while the KRL Commuter Line for the Yogyakarta-Palur route reaches approximately 4,500 passengers per day. In addition to passenger services, the station also handles freight transport.

As an initial step in the area’s development, KAI Daop 6 is conducting restructuring on the south side of the station. One of the primary focuses is the separation of dedicated passenger access roads from public roads.

In the process of this restructuring, KAI Daop 6 has carried out the clearing of 13 company-owned houses in the area surrounding the station, he said. Feni emphasised that these buildings are not classified as Cultural Heritage or Protected Buildings, as confirmed by the Yogyakarta City Culture Office.

Of the 13 company houses, 11 buildings have been demolished, while two houses have been maintained in accordance with the directions and recommendations of the Yogyakarta City Culture Office, Feni said. He ensured that the entire restructuring and clearing process has undergone procedures and intensive coordination with relevant agencies and parties.

The restructuring of Lempuyangan Station is directed towards supporting KAI’s vision to optimise the station as a public space (lifestyle hub) that connects locations, people, and communities. Moving forward, Lempuyangan Station will be developed into an ideal intermodal integration node to support public mobility and encourage the growth of tourism and the local economy in Yogyakarta City and its surroundings, he added.
