Lembah Anai Route Restoration Hits 95%, Full Opening Targeted for End of July

Efforts to restore connectivity in West Sumatra following a disaster are showing significant results. After approximately seven months of rehabilitation, the main access route connecting Padang City with the central region of West Sumatra is targeted to fully reopen for all types of vehicles by the end of July 2026. Several sections of the national road in the Lembah Anai area, Tanah Datar Regency, were damaged by a hydrometeorological disaster that struck the region. During the rehabilitation period, the government maintained limited mobility by opening the route for certain types of vehicles. Now, with progress exceeding 95 percent, the restoration is entering its final phase, raising hopes that community connectivity and logistics distribution will soon return to normal.

Commitment Making Officer for the West Sumatra National Road Implementation Agency, Noor Arias Syamsu, stated that all physical works are being accelerated to meet the full opening target by the end of July. He noted that the current progress has surpassed 95 percent and expressed optimism that all work will be completed on schedule, allowing the route to reopen for all vehicle types. Remaining tasks include the completion of drainage systems, slope reinforcement, and the refinement of road safety facilities. Noor Arias explained that the restoration is not solely focused on repairing the road surface but also on strengthening supporting elements to ensure the infrastructure is safer and more resilient against future potential disasters.

The plan for the full reopening of the Lembah Anai route has been met with positive reactions from the public. A road user, Rizal, said that the route’s operation would cut travel time and reduce the increased costs of goods distribution caused by traffic diversions. Another resident, Agustin, added that smooth access through Lembah Anai would provide a significant boost to the recovery of trade, small businesses, and the tourism sector, which heavily depend on this main artery. The Padang-Bukittinggi route via Lembah Anai is part of the West Sumatran section of the Trans-Sumatra National Road, serving thousands of vehicles daily and acting as the primary link between Padang and areas such as Padang Panjang, Bukittinggi, Agam, and Limapuluh Kota. When the hydrometeorological disaster struck the area in late 2025, several road sections, bridges, and slopes were damaged, severing access. The Task Force for the Acceleration of Post-Disaster Rehabilitation and Reconstruction in Sumatra subsequently carried out phased rehabilitation while maintaining public access through limited traffic management.
