Legok Nangka Waste-to-Energy Plant Construction Resumes, Set to Solve Bandung Raya's Rubbish Crisis
Construction of the Legok Nangka Waste Processing and Final Disposal Site (TPPAS) in Bandung Regency resumed on Wednesday (29/7).
The inauguration was carried out by Deputy Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Yuliot Tanjung, West Java Governor Dedi Mulyadi, regional heads across Greater Bandung, and various other related parties.
The Deputy Minister explained that the presence of the Legok Nangka TPPAS offers a solution to the mounting waste piles in Greater Bandung. This modern facility will not only process waste on a massive scale to create a better environment and public health, but will also produce sustainable renewable energy.
“This will resolve the waste piles; it can be processed, so it will bring about a better environmental impact, as well as for public health. And we will also gain sustainable energy, clean energy in the form of new renewable energy,” said Yuliot.
In terms of capacity and employment, he detailed that the facility will absorb up to 1,500 workers and generate approximately 40 megawatts of electricity. The project is expected to strengthen energy supply availability in West Java Province.
“For this activity, the total workforce to be absorbed will be 1,500 workers, and it will generate around 40 megawatts of electricity. This will strengthen energy availability in West Java Province. So job absorption will also be evident in the implementation of this activity,” he said.
Yuliot also emphasised that the smooth running of this project was achieved thanks to synergy and cross-sectoral support, from ministries, the provincial government, regency and municipal governments, to all levels of society.
“We hope that, in line with the 2029 development target, commercial operation (COD) can already be achieved,” he said.
The construction of the Legok Nangka TPPAS, he continued, is a follow-up to the President’s instruction. The central government plans to build similar integrated waste processing facilities in various other strategic agglomerations.
“There are several integrated waste processing facilities like this being developed. The first is here in West Java, and we will also carry them out in several agglomerations, including Greater Bogor and Greater Bekasi. So with this priority, in accordance with the President’s instruction, we hope all waste, particularly in West Java, can be resolved. Energy availability can be increased through waste processing into energy,” he said.
CONSISTENT LEADERSHIP
West Java Governor Dedi Mulyadi affirmed that the realisation of the Legok Nangka TPPAS is the result of consistent regional leadership across successive terms.
“The province, since the leadership of Pak Ahmad Heryawan, then Pak Bey Machmudin, up to today, has succeeded in bringing all those ideas into more concrete steps. There is investment, an investor, and the implementation of the activity, after all regulations were fulfilled based on recommendations from the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources,” he said.
He assessed that the presence of this project not only resolves environmental problems, but also serves as an important instrument to educate the public and improve quality of life.
“This will become one of the catalysts for building a modern waste processing system. It will also educate people to be orderly and live cleanly. In addition, it will improve air quality and environmental quality,” he concluded.
