Legislators to be tested for drugs

PONTIANAK, West Kalimantan: The Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI Perjuangan) is to force its legislators in West Kalimantan to undergo drug testing.

If the urine tests return positive results for the presence of drugs then the legislators responsible for the sample would be fired as legislators and party members, PDI Perjuangan leader of the provincial chapter Rudy Alamsyahrum said on Wednesday.

The plan follows suspicions that some members of the West Kalimantan legislative council (DPRD) are addicted to shabu-shabu (crystal amphetamine), ecstasy or other illegal drugs.

Rudy, also a deputy DPRD speaker, said the fight against narcotics was a serious problem, the eradication of which was a priority of the party.

"We will not play games, let alone the drug eradication ordered by President Megawati Soekarnoputri," he said. Megawati also chairs PDI Perjuangan. --Antara
