Legislators support ban on money politics perpetrators from future elections
Jakarta (ANTARA) - Member of House of Representatives Commission II Ahmad Doli Kurnia believes that the Election Supervisory Agency’s (Bawaslu) proposal to disqualify perpetrators of money politics and include them on a blacklist prohibiting participation in future elections can drive a cleaner and more dignified conduct of elections.
“The most important thing is our collective commitment to realise and understand the importance of elections with integrity,” Doli said in Jakarta on Friday.
He stressed that all parties need to consider steps to ensure the conduct of elections is free from various moral hazard practices.
Therefore, he believes there need to be various breakthroughs in formulating the concept of future elections.
Recently, he said, several recommendations have emerged to improve the election system, including a proposal from the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) regarding restrictions on the use of cash during the election process.
“We will continue to await other new proposals to be studied and developed,” said the Deputy Chairman of the House of Representatives Legislation Body.
According to Herwyn, perpetrators of money politics should not only be disqualified from the contestation but also prohibited from participating in elections or regional head elections in the following period to provide a deterrent effect.
“Those who have been proven to have engaged in money politics should, at minimum, not be allowed to participate in the next election period, including regional head elections,” he said during a public discussion at the Bawaslu RI Office in Jakarta on Wednesday (6/5).
