Legislators push for building bylaw

CIANJUR, West Java: Cianjur regency needs a new bylaw to authorize the demolition of buildings constructed without a permit on green areas, a local legislator said here on Tuesday.

Erman Husein said there were many bungalows and housing complexes which violated presidential Decree No.114/1999 on the handling of development in Bogor, Puncak and Cianjur.

"They all need to be demolished," he said. "The Cianjur administration needs a bylaw to reinforce the presidential decree. The regency must have the courage and be lawful in taking action on these buildings."

He referred to the areas around the Sukaresmi and Pacet districts, which were full of buildings. "The areas are supposed to be for (rain) water catchment."

Another legislator, Dadang Ahmad Zaebnudin, said that the uncontrolled exploitation of the Cianjur resort area would result in a future disaster.

At least 54 real estate companies have built houses in the areas, Tjepi Mulyana, the chairman of the Green Foundation, said. --Antara
