Legislator Urges Probe into Root Cause of Case Involving Health Workers Allegedly Insulting BPJS Patient
Member of Commission IX of the Indonesian House of Representatives, Edy Wuryanto, has highlighted the alleged incident of health workers insulting a BPJS patient named Yurizal Tri Chaerawan. Edy believes the case must become a momentum to evaluate healthcare service governance comprehensively.
“This case must be viewed holistically. We are certainly grieving over the patient’s death. But what is more important is ensuring that the cause is studied objectively so that it becomes a national lesson and is not repeated elsewhere,” Edy told reporters on Thursday (6/8/2026).
According to him, limitations in inpatient room availability can occur at any hospital. However, he stressed that this should not be allowed to continue unchecked.
“If an inpatient room is not available, the system must immediately work to find a solution through a fast, coordinated, and transparent referral mechanism,” he said.
He added that the case demonstrates that Indonesia needs not only additional healthcare facilities but also improvements in service governance.
The PDIP politician said the government needs to accelerate the integration of a real-time bed availability information system. This would enable hospitals, BPJS Kesehatan, and referral facilities to make decisions based on the same data.
“A service audit is not about finding a scapegoat, but about identifying the root cause. Every serious case must become a national learning opportunity to produce system improvements, not merely personnel changes,” he said.
Furthermore, he expressed regret over the comments on Yurizal’s social media accounts. He urged health workers to maintain proper communication in the digital space.
“Even when communicating as individuals on social media, the public still sees them as doctors or health workers. Therefore, professional organisations need to strengthen guidance on digital communication ethics. In the digital era, professional competence is not only about clinical ability but also the ability to maintain empathetic and responsible communication in the public sphere,” he said.
The case came to light after Yurizal Tri Chaerawan’s account went viral on social media. On 22 July 2026, via his Threads account @yurizaltrich, he claimed to have waited eight hours for an inpatient room. In his post, he did not name the hospital where he was being treated.
“8 hours and still no room. I don’t want to expose the hospital because I use BPJS,” Yurizal wrote.
Instead of receiving sympathy, the post was flooded with insulting comments. Some accounts even suggested that Yurizal move to the mortuary so he could get a room faster. There were also comments that made light of serious illness and self-harm in a joking tone.
Several accounts that wrote these comments are suspected to be doctors, nurses, or other health workers based on information listed on their social media profiles. However, the identities and professions of the account owners have not yet been fully verified.
The discussion widened after Yurizal was reported to have passed away on 31 July 2026. The sad news was conveyed by his cousin via social media and caused Yurizal’s old posts to go viral once again.
