Legislator Urges Modern Waste Management Implementation in Bintang Mountains Regency
A member of the House of Representatives Commission XII, Arif Riyanto Uopdana, is urging the Central Government to promptly implement modern waste management systems in Bintang Mountains Regency, Papua Highlands.
This step is considered urgent given the minimal waste management infrastructure in the region. Arif highlighted field conditions where both household and industrial waste are still managed conventionally without adequate waste segregation processes.
“Currently in Bintang Mountains, waste management infrastructure remains extremely limited. Bintang Mountains does not yet have a temporary waste disposal facility with 3R (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle) capabilities. Waste is currently being dumped directly into the Final Disposal Site (TPA) through open dumping methods,” Arif stated in a statement received on Friday (13 March).
He explained that waste management conditions in the Bintang Mountains region, particularly in the capital Oksibil, still employ open dumping methods that need to be converted to controlled landfill systems.
“We will push the Ministry of Environment and the Ministry of Public Works to establish 3R waste management facilities (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle) in Bintang Mountains. This will reduce the amount of waste entering the TPA,” said the legislator from the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDIP).
In accordance with President Prabowo’s current government programme, waste is considered an important issue and receives serious attention from the President.
“We hope the Minister of Environment and the Minister of Public Works will provide attention and support for the development of 3R waste processing facilities and controlled landfill TPA in Bintang Mountains,” he said.
