Legislator urges Jakarta Environment Agency to organise waste transportation system
The Chair of Commission D of the Jakarta Regional House of Representatives (DPRD), Yuke Yurike, has urged the Jakarta Environment Agency (DLH) to clearly organise the waste transportation system, including when a scheduled collection timetable is eventually implemented. “Waste transportation must be regulated immediately. Whether it uses a scheduling system or another mechanism, the most important thing is that it must be socialised to the public first,” Yuke said in Jakarta on Thursday. She assessed that the success of the policy to reduce waste sent to the Bantargebang Integrated Waste Treatment Plant (TPST) in Bekasi, West Java, is highly dependent on the readiness of facilities and infrastructure on the ground. Therefore, she requested that the Jakarta Provincial Government ensure the readiness of all supporting facilities, from sorting sites to transport fleets, so they are truly available and adequate. In addition, Yuke also asked the Jakarta Provincial Government not to focus solely on the policy of restricting waste shipments to the Bantargebang TPST, but also to provide massive assistance to the community so that the waste management process runs effectively. According to her, waste management issues at the community level still require continuous education and assistance. This would ensure residents have a shared understanding of how to sort and reduce waste at the source. “Environmental problems in the community actually still require massive assistance to be more targeted. Do not let the waste restriction policy be implemented while the public is not ready to carry it out,” Yuke asserted.
