Legislator Urges Equal Economic Opportunities for Visually Impaired Persons

A number of visually impaired individuals in Denpasar, Bali, continue to work independently as massage therapists to meet their daily living needs. I Ketut Kariyasa Adnyana, a member of Commission VIII of the Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR RI), believes this situation highlights the importance of equal economic opportunities for persons with disabilities.

Kariyasa stated that visual impairment should not act as a barrier for individuals with disabilities to work and contribute to society.

“I highly appreciate the spirit of our visually impaired brothers and sisters who continue to work, remain independent, and do not give up on their circumstances. Our presence today is a manifestation of solidarity, showing that they are not alone and remain an important part of society that deserves attention and support,” he said in a statement on Monday (31/08/2026).

The PDI Perjuangan politician assessed that support for persons with disabilities should not be limited to social assistance alone. They also require access to develop skills and earn an independent income.

According to Kariyasa, persons with disabilities should be positioned as members of society who possess the capability to work and be economically empowered, rather than being viewed solely as recipients of aid.

As a member of Commission VIII of the DPR RI, which oversees social affairs, Kariyasa considers equal opportunities for persons with disabilities to be a vital aspect of inclusive development.

He expressed hope that support for the visually impaired could help meet their needs while strengthening their motivation to continue working and creating.

“Hopefully, this togetherness provides not only material benefits but also strengthens the sense of brotherhood and social care within the community. Because, in truth, human values will always grow when we care for and strengthen one another,” he added.
