Legislator Supports Pramono's Labour-Intensive Programme to Curb Unemployment
The Speaker of the Jakarta Regional Legislative Council (DPRD), Suhud Alynudin, supports the plan by Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung to open 2,800 job opportunities through a Labour-Intensive Programme (Program Padat Karya). The programme is regarded as a concrete step towards reducing unemployment rates amidst a challenging economic climate.
Suhud stated that the Labour-Intensive Programme needs to be implemented immediately so that its benefits can be directly felt by those in need of employment. “It is a good proposal. It is very beneficial amidst a difficult economic situation where unemployment is high. It deserves support,” Suhud said in a statement on Saturday.
According to him, efforts to expand job opportunities have become an urgent necessity in Jakarta. Consequently, the DPRD supports the Jakarta Provincial Government’s efforts to broaden employment opportunities for residents through this programme.
Suhud also proposed that the Labour-Intensive Programme be integrated with the Internship Programme currently being promoted by the central government. The synergy between these two programmes is believed to accelerate labour absorption, particularly for the productive age group currently seeking work.
However, he cautioned that the implementation of the Labour-Intensive Programme should not focus solely on urban arrangement and improvement works. He noted that many other sectors possess significant potential for labour absorption, such as the creative industry and various other sectors.
Previously, Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung planned to create 2,800 jobs through the Labour-Intensive Programme as an effort to expand employment opportunities and assist the public in facing economic pressures.
Suhud Alynudin also committed to strengthening legislation and synergy with the Jakarta Provincial Government to realise Jakarta’s vision as a global city. He noted that Jakarta’s fiscal condition is currently facing significant pressure, with development budgets experiencing deficits and a reduction in Revenue Sharing Funds (DBH).
