Legislator Supports Placing Polri Under the President
The assignment of Polri members outside the institution must be regulated clearly, transparently, and accountably. Jakarta (ANTARA) - Abdullah, a member of Commission III of the Indonesian House of Representatives from the PKB faction, supports placing Polri not under any specific ministry but directly under the President. This aligns with the recommendations submitted by the Commission for Accelerating Police Reform to President Prabowo Subianto. “This recommendation is spot on. From the start, I have consistently advocated that Polri must remain under the President, not placed under a ministry,” he stated in an official press release received in Jakarta on Wednesday. One key aspect is the command chain, which would be better coordinated so that all presidential directives can be directly implemented by the police. Furthermore, Abdullah continued, the Polri institution would be more independent, allowing law enforcement to be carried out more firmly without interference from any party. In addition, Abdullah highlighted several points from the recommendations submitted to the President. One of them concerns the regulation of Polri members assigned outside the police institution. According to Abdullah, this policy must be based on clear legal foundations to avoid overlapping authorities. “The assignment of Polri members outside the institution must be regulated clearly, transparently, and accountably. Therefore, I agree that revising the Police Law is an urgent need so that such regulations have legal certainty,” he emphasised. Abdullah hopes that the recommendations submitted by the Commission for Accelerating Police Reform can serve as strategic considerations for the government and parliament in promoting more comprehensive, professional police reforms in line with democratic demands. Previously, the Commission for Accelerating Police Reform submitted six main recommendations to the President, namely affirming Polri’s position under the President, strengthening the National Police Commission, mechanisms for appointing the National Police Chief, regulating the assignment of Polri members outside the police institution, strengthening institutional and managerial aspects, and revising the Police Law.
