Legislator: Strengthen Early Detection to Prevent Transnational Crime
Jakarta (ANTARA) - Member of Commission XIII of the Indonesian House of Representatives, Marinus Gea, is pushing the Directorate General of Immigration under the Ministry of Law and Human Rights to strengthen early detection of foreigners in order to prevent transnational crimes.
Marinus, during a working meeting with the Bali Regional Immigration Office in Denpasar on Wednesday, said that weak oversight has the potential to cause serious impacts on regional economic stability.
“The potential for transnational crimes involving foreign nationals must be anticipated early because it can cause economic losses to the region,” he stated, as per information received in Jakarta.
The legislator in the fields of immigration and human rights requested that early detection and firm actions against violators be made the top priority.
“Strengthening early detection and firm actions against perpetrators is a priority so that immigration functions remain aligned with protecting national interests,” he said.
In particular, Marinus highlighted the urgency of strengthening immigration performance and governance in Bali Province amid increasing international tourism dynamics and high global mobility.
Oversight of residence permits to the handling of foreign nationals (WNA) placed in immigration detention rooms is deemed necessary to be tightened to prevent immigration violations and potential cross-border threats.
“Strengthening immigration governance is very important to increase the effectiveness of oversight, law enforcement, and early detection of violations committed by foreign nationals in Bali,” he said.
In addition, he also emphasised the importance of cross-sector collaboration in immigration oversight.
Marinus encouraged the Bali Immigration ranks to actively involve local government and community components. Public participation can become one of the important instruments in strengthening oversight of the presence and activities of foreign nationals.
“Public involvement is crucial in strengthening early detection and reporting of foreign national violations,” he said.
Previously, Director General of Immigration Hendarsam Marantoko emphasised that there would be no tolerance for foreign nationals committing various immigration violations in Indonesian territory, especially in Bali Province, by imposing firm sanctions in accordance with applicable regulations.
This warning was conveyed by Hendarsam in follow-up to the results of the Satgas Patroli Dharma Dewata operation on Bali Island, which netted 62 foreign nationals (WNA) detected committing various immigration violations.
“I have ordered all ranks to act firmly without compromise,” said Hendarsam on Tuesday (5/5).
