Jakarta (ANTARA) - The chairman of the House of Representatives’ Commission II, Rifqinizamy Karsayuda, has said that regional government governance must be strengthened and made accountable so that it can be more responsive to the needs of the public.

He made the remarks after leading a recess working visit by Commission II of the DPR, during which the delegation met with regents and mayors across South Kalimantan as well as commissioners and directors of Bank Kalimantan Selatan at the Mahligai Building in the city of Banjarmasin on Friday.

“We want to ensure that regional government governance is running effectively, transparently, and truly in the interests of the people,” he said in an official press release received in Jakarta on Friday.

During his visit, he assessed that the synergy between regional government officials and regionally owned enterprises (BUMD) in Banjarmasin was functioning well. He expressed hope that this collaborative model would continue in order to maximise public services.

He also highlighted the important role of BUMD in boosting regional economies. He argued that BUMD must deliver fresh breakthroughs so that communities can prosper through a variety of business programmes.

In this way, the presence of BUMD can deliver positive impact rather than merely seeking corporate profit.

“BUMD must be managed professionally and with integrity, so that they are capable of becoming a sustainable source of locally generated revenue,” he explained.

He expressed confidence that provincial governments and BUMD can work in synergy to improve the quality of regional economies.
