Legislator: May Day 2026 Symbolises Government Closeness to Workers
Jakarta (ANTARA) - Chairman of the Gerindra Faction in the DKI Jakarta DPRD, Setyoko, stated that the commemoration of International Labour Day (May Day) 2026 in the Monas area, Central Jakarta, on Friday (1/5), serves as a symbol of closeness between the government and workers.
“The commemoration of International Labour Day (May Day) 2026 in the Monas area, Jakarta, becomes an important momentum for the major consolidation of the working class in Indonesia,” said Setyoko in Jakarta on Saturday.
He also assessed that the presence of President Prabowo Subianto among hundreds of thousands of workers at that time serves as a strong symbol of the government’s support for workers.
This year’s May Day commemoration, he said, presents a different atmosphere; workers are no longer facing off against authorities in conveying their aspirations, but instead engaging in direct dialogue with the government.
“The President is present, listening, and even responding to the demands conveyed by the workers,” stated Setyoko.
According to him, Prabowo’s leadership has opened up new space for the unity of workers on the same stage with the government.
“Prabowo, the real president of the workers,” concluded Setyoko.
Furthermore, he stated that the May Day 2026 momentum shows that all elements of workers can unite in a more conducive atmosphere.
In fact, Setyoko assessed that Indonesia is now one of the few countries that celebrates Labour Day together with the government.
“Prabowo is one of three presidents who celebrate International Labour Day. First Venezuela, second Bolivia, third Indonesia, which celebrates Labour Day with workers,” said Setyoko.
He added that the presence of President Prabowo at the Labour Day commemoration is not merely a symbol, but also a form of the government’s real commitment to workers’ welfare.
Several policies are considered pro-worker, ranging from the enactment of the Domestic Workers (PRT) Law, the provision of holiday bonuses for online motorcycle taxi drivers, to protection for workers in the fisheries sector.
The enactment of the PRT Law, the provision of holiday bonuses for online motorcycle taxi drivers, and protection for fishery vessel crew are outlined in Presidential Regulation (Perpres) Number 25 of 2026 on the Ratification of International Labour Organization Convention Number 188 to ensure protection and welfare for fishery vessel crew and others.
“This is proof that the government is working to prosper workers so that Indonesia advances,” emphasised Setyoko.
Nevertheless, he reminded that workers are still awaiting the realisation of several policies, particularly regarding platform fee cuts for online motorcycle taxi drivers.
“What is awaited is the realisation of Perpres Number 27 of 2026, a cut below 10 percent from the platform for online motorcycle taxi colleagues,” revealed Setyoko.
Finally, he invited all elements of society to maintain unity as the foundation of national development.
“Workers unite, fishermen unite, farmers unite, the people unite, Indonesia’s advancement will surely soon be realised,” concluded Setyoko.
