The Deputy Chairperson II of the Pontianak Regional House of Representatives (DPRD), West Kalimantan, Bebby Nailufa, believes that hosting the Polytron Pontianak Indonesia Masters Super 100 can stimulate the regional economy.

“The organisation of an event of even international class clearly has an impact on the regional economy, with many sectors being positively affected,” she stated in Pontianak on Sunday.

According to her, the most evident economic impact felt by the region is the revitalisation of MSMEs (Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises), as there were 29 MSME stalls present during the Polytron Pontianak Indonesia Masters Super 100. Furthermore, the hospitality and restaurant sectors have also benefited.

She noted that the international badminton championship also serves as a momentum for Pontianak to strengthen its image as a sports city, supported by the adequate facilities and infrastructure of the Ahmad Yani Integrated Sports Hall (GOR Terpadu).

The presence of international-class athletes, both from Indonesia and other nations, also provides experience and motivation for local athletes to improve their skills and achievements.

“This is in line with the Pontianak City Government’s hope to develop the region as a sports city,” she said.

During the series of activities, which lasted approximately two weeks, tickets were consistently sold out. According to Bebby, this demonstrates the high level of public interest in watching international-class athletes compete in person.

Regarding the development of the Ahmad Yani Integrated Sports Hall, Bebby mentioned that several parts of the facilities still need improvement to better meet the standards for hosting international sporting events.

“With the existence of similar activities, we must strive to improve further; this building needs to be upgraded to better meet international standards,” she said.

Bebby also expressed hope that environmental conditions and air quality, affected by haze from forest and land fires, would not hinder the organisation of sporting events or public activities.

“The success of organising international events like the Indonesia Masters can serve as capital for Pontianak to attract more activities on both national and international scales,” she explained.
