Legislator distributes masks to commuters to anticipate volcanic ash
Jakarta (ANTARA) - Hardiyanto Kenneth, a member of Commission C of the Jakarta DPRD, alongside officials from the Grogol Petamburan District, has been distributing masks to pedestrians and motorists passing near Soeharto Heerdjan Hospital to anticipate volcanic ash resulting from the eruption of Mount Anak Krakatau.
“We have observed that exposure to volcanic ash from the Mount Anak Krakatau eruption has not yet fully subsided. Therefore, as a precautionary measure, I am conducting this free mask distribution activity,” Kenneth stated in a briefing in Jakarta on Tuesday.
He noted that the distribution of masks is a mitigation step intended to reduce the risks associated with exposure to volcanic ash and airborne dust.
Kenneth, as he is commonly known, added that the activity follows directives from the Governor of Jakarta, Pramono Anung, for district and sub-district officials to assist in distributing masks to the public.
Beyond health concerns, the distribution was prompted by reports that the price of protective equipment has begun to rise since volcanic ash started spreading across Jakarta on Sunday, 6 September 2026.
“I have prepared 100 boxes of masks for today. We will distribute them all until they are exhausted to all motorists and pedestrians passing through,” he said.
He also urged mask vendors not to implement unreasonable price hikes amidst a situation where the public urgently requires protection from dust and volcanic ash.
“We are advising mask sellers not to raise prices arbitrarily. Prices must be adjusted to reasonable margins in accordance with the Governor’s instructions,” he said.
Furthermore, he requested that the public should not worry if they face difficulties obtaining masks due to limited stock or rising prices.
“For the people of Jakarta who find it difficult to obtain masks or feel the prices are too expensive, please contact me via my social media. Do not be shy or hesitant; as people’s representatives and part of the government, we are obligated to look after the health of our citizens. I will distribute them free of charge,” he added.
