Legislator Demands Severe Punishment for Mob That Killed Suspected Chicken Thief
A member of the House of Representatives (DPR) from the Prosperous Justice Party (PKS) faction, Nasir Djamil, has responded to the death of a suspected chicken thief who was beaten by a mob in Tabanan, Bali. Nasir stressed that vigilante action cannot be justified. “The root of the problem is that our society’s legal awareness is still low, so vigilante behaviour often occurs,” Nasir told reporters on Monday (27/7/2026). The PKS politician said the incident in Bali serves as a lesson for all parties. According to him, even though the victim was suspected of theft, the public has no right to take someone’s life. “What happened in Bali is exactly like the saying ‘the charcoal is spent, the iron is destroyed.’ The chicken thief died, and the perpetrators of the mob attack must be severely punished for taking someone’s life without right,” he said. Nasir stated that the perpetrators of the mob attack must receive severe punishment commensurate with their actions. He emphasised that vigilante behaviour cannot be justified. “I agree that the perpetrators should be severely punished. However, the residents’ anger may have stemmed from the victim frequently committing thefts, which made the residents furious,” he said. “Whatever the reason, I agree that the perpetrators should receive a fitting punishment. Going forward, government administrators at the village level must pay attention to social issues in their areas,” he added. Previously, a man with the initials KD died after being mobbed in Banjar Dinas Juwuk Legi, Baturiti District, Tabanan, Bali, after he was allegedly caught stealing a fighting cock. A video went viral showing one of KD’s children crying over his body upon arrival at the funeral home. According to detikBali on Sunday (26/7), the Head of Sidatapa Village, Buleleng District, I Made Sutama, expressed his regret over the incident. KD leaves behind a wife and three children, two of whom are still in school, with the youngest in the first grade of primary school. “He has three children. The eldest is already married, the second is in the first grade of senior high school, and the youngest is still in the first grade of primary school. I was the one who picked up his body yesterday. When I arrived at the house and saw his child crying uncontrollably, I was truly saddened,” he said. The heartbreaking moment of KD’s youngest daughter weeping over his body went viral on social media. The little girl could be seen among a crowd of people, calling out for her lifeless father while crying.
