Legislator Condemns Israel's Move to Claim West Bank Territory
Jakarta (ANTARA) - A member of Commission I of the House of Representatives from the PKB faction, Syamsu Rizal, commonly known as Daeng Ical, has condemned the Israeli government's approval of a land ownership claim proposal in the West Bank, Palestine.
The move has been described as the first of its kind since Israel's occupation of the West Bank in 1967. The policy is seen as further entrenching annexation practices and worsening the protracted conflict in the region.
"Israel's move is a genuine annexation of Palestinian land. This is real colonialism that must not be tolerated," said Daeng Ical in an official press statement received in Jakarta on Wednesday.
According to Daeng Ical, Israel has unilaterally seized land belonging to Palestinian communities without considering the fundamental rights of residents who have long inhabited the territory.
Such arbitrary actions, he continued, have the potential to escalate tensions and obstruct the peace efforts that the international community has long pursued.
Beyond strongly condemning the Israeli government, he also urged the Indonesian government to take a firm stance in responding to the policy.
In his view, Indonesia must utilise its membership in the Board of Peace (BoP) to pressure Israel.
"The Indonesian government, having joined the Board of Peace, must speak loudly in rejecting this colonialism. Indonesia has a constitutional mandate to oppose all forms of colonialism in the world," he said.
By exerting pressure on Israel through the BoP, he expressed confidence that the international community would also increasingly voice similar condemnation.
In doing so, Indonesia's commitment to supporting Palestinian independence would be further strengthened.
