Jakarta (ANTARA) - Member of Commission A of the DKI Jakarta DPRD, Kevin Wu, stated that Jakarta still needs to add more surveillance cameras or Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) to improve the security of the capital’s residents.

“If we look at it now, the revelation of criminal activities in society is also due to camera captures. And what we regret is that more camera captures come from netizens, from residents and the public,” said Kevin Wu in Jakarta on Monday.

According to him, the DKI Jakarta Communications, Informatics and Statistics Agency (Diskominfotik) needs to continue adding CCTV, as there are currently only 1,494 points across DKI Jakarta.

However, research by the public accounting firm PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) in 2017 revealed that Jakarta ideally should have 70,000 CCTV cameras.

“Based on the data we found from PwC research, for a global city size, Jakarta ideally should have CCTV at around 70,000 points. That means if it’s only around 1,400, the number is just 2 percent,” he said.

According to Kevin, the lack of CCTV is what causes high cases of criminal activities such as thuggery, illegal parking, and others in Jakarta.

“We hope that the use of the Rp256 billion budget can be more effective and efficient so that the number of CCTV points can be increased,” he added.

Previously, DKI Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung mandated that buildings with four storeys or more must be connected to the Provincial Government of DKI’s surveillance camera (CCTV) to strengthen supervision and create an integrated security system.

“So, for CCTV, we are deciding that buildings with more than four storeys, in accordance with the Governor’s Regulation, will be connected to the CCTV managed by the DKI Jakarta Government, so that Jakarta will be integrated,” said Pramono in Central Jakarta on Saturday (4/4).

Pramono views this effort as a step in modernising the city’s security and monitoring system.

With this CCTV integration, the DKI Provincial Government can monitor the city’s situation more quickly and effectively, from emergency handling, criminality, to traffic management.

In the future, the installation of this CCTV will reach areas up to the sub-districts in Jakarta.
