Legal Team Condemns Roy Suryo's Arrest: 'This Serves Jokowi's Interests'

Two suspects in the case of alleged false diploma claims against Indonesia’s seventh President, Jokowi, Roy Suryo and Tifauzia Tyassuma, also known as Dr Tifa, have been arrested by Polda Metro Jaya police. This was conveyed by Roy Suryo’s lawyer, Ahmad Khozinudin, when contacted by CNNIndonesia.com on Friday (19/6) morning. He shared a press release from Roy Suryo’s legal counsel regarding the arrest of their client. In the press release, they questioned the actions of Polda Metro Jaya in carrying out the arrest, a coercive measure, against Roy and Dr Tifa, as they had always been cooperative in fulfilling police summons. “We regret the actions of Polda Metro Jaya investigators who carried out coercive measures through the arrest of our client, even though our client has been cooperative in fulfilling investigators’ summons and has even always carried out mandatory reporting,” said Roy Suryo’s legal team. “Secondly, if the action in question is in the context of stage two or as reported the case file is complete, then such action could be carried out by issuing a Summons Letter. Not by coercive (repressive) measures through an arrest process,” they continued. On that basis, Roy’s legal team suspects the arrest demonstrates police action that does not uphold norms and ethics, and facilitates political power intervening in the law. “We believe this arrest confirms that the law is not proceeding according to norms and ethics, but rather is already serving Jokowi’s political interests,” they said. “This arrest actually confirms that there is political power intervening in the law, so that civilised methods of law enforcement through summons are abandoned and replaced by uncivilised, repressive and intimidating methods by carrying out an arrest,” they added. In the press release, Khozinudin and colleagues stated Roy was arrested around 7:00 am on Friday morning. The same applied to Dr Tifa. “Today, Friday 19 June 2026, at approximately 07:00, our client Roy Suryo Notodiprojo was reported by his wife to have been arrested by Polda Metro Jaya investigators. At the same time, we also received information that Tifauzia Tyassuma was also arrested,” he said. As of the writing of this report, CNNIndonesia.com had not yet received an official statement from the police regarding the arrests of Roy Suryo and Dr Tifa. Polda Metro Jaya previously stated that the case files for Roy Suryo and Dr Tifa in the case of alleged false diploma claims against Indonesia’s 7th President Joko Widodo had been declared complete, or P21, by the DKI Jakarta High Prosecutor’s Office. “Alhamdulillah, as of today the prosecutor has stated that the case file we sent to the DKI High Prosecutor’s Office no longer requires fulfilment of the deficiencies we previously addressed,” said Polda Metro Jaya Director of General Criminal Investigation, Senior Commissioner Iman Imanuddin, at Polda Metro Jaya on Tuesday (2/6). At that time, Iman stated that in the near future his party would carry out stage II transfer, handing over evidence and suspects to the prosecutor’s office to be brought to court. However, at that time, Iman could not confirm when the stage II transfer would be conducted. After the stage II transfer is completed, the prosecutor will subsequently prepare the indictment and proceed with the trial process. Approximately a week earlier, Roy Suryo had alleged that the announcement of the complete case file status, or P21, in his case was made by Polda Metro Jaya under duress. “Is there really a P-21 yet? That’s the point. Have you been informed? If the info is there, from that info, from the murmurs, the complete file has actually been there since last year… So, all this time we’ve heard that the P21 was announced under duress. I say under duress,” Roy said on CNN Indonesia TV’s Head to Head programme on Wednesday (10/6) evening. According to Roy, if a case has been declared P21 by the prosecutor’s office, there is usually a letter that serves as the basis between the police investigator and the public prosecutor. He also questioned whether that letter already existed. “If the police already have this letter from the prosecutor’s office, they would certainly have announced its issuance date. Then when the stage two handover date is. Until now, when the Director announced it on Tuesday, 2 June, it is already H+8, and there is still no plan for stage two, whereas this letter actually has a deadline of how many days,” he said at the time.
