Legal roundup: Unsoed case to West Kalimantan forest fire handling
A number of legal and security events took place on Saturday (22/8), ranging from developments in the investigation into alleged corruption in new student admissions at Jenderal Soedirman University (Unsoed) to the handling of forest and land fires in West Kalimantan.

The Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) said Jenderal Soedirman University (Unsoed) Rector Akhmad Sodiq bought three plots of land after allegedly receiving gratuities through his nephew, MYN alias Nono. Acting Director of Investigation at the KPK Achmad Taufik Husein explained that Sodiq had allegedly given instructions to MYN during the new student admission period in 2025 and 2026 using the codes ‘do not ask for it at the beginning’ and ‘if it is given, say thank you’.

The KPK revealed the alleged role of teachers as collectors or coordinators in offering places for new students through Unsoed’s independent admission route at prices ranging from Rp50 million to Rp500 million. Acting Director of Investigation at the KPK Achmad Taufik Husein said the KPK had found evidence of teachers allegedly tasked with gathering students at their schools.

The KPK suspects Unsoed Vice Rector for Student Affairs Norman Arie Prayogo of extorting up to Rp650 million from the parents of prospective new students so that their children could enter the Faculty of Medicine. The KPK suspects Norman carried out the extortion through two intermediaries, namely DMW and AW.
