Legal Representatives of Andrie Yunus Request Evidence of Bottle and Helmet to be Examined
A member of the Legal Advocacy Team for Democracy (TAUD), Airlangga Julio, suspects that the perpetrator of the attack on Andrie Yunus, Vice-Coordinator of KontraS, may have also been burned by the acid they used. This suspicion arose because the assailant discarded a purple bottle and removed their helmet after attacking Andrie on Jalan Salemba I-Talang, Central Jakarta, on Thursday evening, 12 March 2026.
“We suspect the perpetrator may have been injured by the acid they sprayed themselves,” said Airlangga at the YLBHI office in Jakarta on Monday, 16 March 2026.
The legal representative of Andrie Yunus stated that a witness discovered a purple bottle believed to be a container for corrosive acid. The bottle has been handed over to the Metro Jaya Police headquarters team. However, the police have not yet presented this bottle at their press conference as a piece of evidence.
According to Airlangga, it is unlikely that the perpetrator would discard a bottle that constitutes important evidence. He also found it unusual that the perpetrator removed their helmet, as doing so risks being captured on Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV). “Therefore, we suspect the perpetrator may have been injured by the acid they sprayed,” he said.
Airlangga requested that law enforcement agencies investigate detailed information about this matter. TAUD also asked the police to examine all medical facilities or healthcare professionals who might be secretly providing treatment to the perpetrator.
TAUD is pressing the police to investigate allegations of attempted premeditated murder behind the attack on Andrie Yunus. The Vice-Coordinator of the Commission for Missing Persons and Victims of Violence was splashed with corrosive acid by an unknown individual on Thursday evening, 12 March 2026, while riding his motorcycle. The perpetrators are believed to be two people riding motorcycles from the opposite direction.
TAUD representative Fadhil Alfathan stated that the attack on the victim appeared to be intended to kill. “The attack on our colleague Andrie Yunus is an attempted premeditated murder,” said Fadhil on Monday, 16 March 2026.
Fadhil explained that the perpetrators were fully aware that the acid they used could have fatal consequences for the victim, especially if the liquid was directed at the victim’s face, making it a deadly attack.
The perpetrators are also believed to have made meticulous plans before carrying out the attack. “We suspect there was a series of surveillance processes to ensure the safe execution of the attack,” said Fadhil at the press conference.
KontraS Coordinator Dimas Bagus Arya stated that the perpetrator splashed corrosive acid on the front of Andrie’s body. After that, Andrie collapsed onto the road. “The victim immediately screamed in pain until he knocked over his motorcycle,” said Dimas on Friday, 13 March 2026.
The corrosive chemical splashed onto Andrie’s right side of the body, including his eye, face, chest, and hand. Parts of the victim’s clothing also melted as a result of the corrosive acid. Medical examinations showed that Andrie suffered serious burns covering 24 per cent of his body.
