Legal Experts Urge the Supreme Court on the Candidate to Replace Anwar Usman as Constitutional Court Judge
Constitutional and Administrative Law Society (CALS), comprising constitutional law experts, has urged the Supreme Court to appoint a candidate for constitutional court judge whose track record is thoroughly proven. ‘The message is, of course, to choose a judge whose track record is truly tested,’ said CALS co-founder Bivitri Susanti at the MK building in Central Jakarta on Thursday, 5 March 2026. Bivitri urged the Supreme Court not to appoint a problematic judge to sit on the Constitutional Court. She said such a judge could face conflicts of interest. ‘Make sure there are no issues that would give him or her many conflicts of interest,’ she said. Bivitri also urged the Supreme Court not to rush in selecting Anwar Usman’s successor. She hopes the Court can ensure the chosen judge has a good track record. ‘There is still until June when Mr Anwar Usman finishes, so there is actually time to obtain a candidate with a truly unblemished track record,’ she said. For information, the Supreme Court has announced ten names of candidates to replace Anwar who passed the administrative screening. The announcement was signed by the Deputy Chief Justice for Judicial Affairs and also the Head of the Selection Committee, Suharto, on Monday (2 February). Recently, the Supreme Court Secretary, Sugiyanto, reported that one participant withdrew from the selection process, Sudharmawatiningsih.
